What's on my playlist for Third Grade?

This week, I'm blogging about my playlists for each grade level, in my music room. For more information about how and why I'm using playlists,  check out this post . Today, let's talk about third grade! Here are three recordings from my third grade playlist: #1: Sasha! This is one of my absolute favorite folk dances! It is a really fun mixer that students LOVE. It looks like it's not available as a single track on iTunes, but can be purchased with this resource , which is a really wonderful book of folk dances. #2: Wau Rauh by Sekaha Angklung Murni from the album "Bali: Balinese …

Specdrums: A fun techie tool for your music room!

I am SUPER excited today to blog about a new piece of technology I have in my music room...a Specdrums ring! I first learned about Specdrums from Katie Wonderly's awesome Instagram page . Then I found out that Amy Abbott had a ring coming, so I reached out to the Specdrums page and was able to get one for my classroom too! So what is a Specdrum ring? It is a ring that you can put on your finger, or students can put on their finger, and they can make music with it by touching different colors. So for example, if you touch red, it might play C, if you touch orange, it might play D, if you touc…

Melodic Intervention 101

This past week, with my second graders, I have been doing centers to practice sol, la, mi, and do. Typically when I do centers (which you can read more about here ), I choose the groups and tell students when to rotate. Last week, though, I've let the students choose which group to go to and when to switch, and I have LOVED the results. It feels so student-centered, and the students take so much ownership in their learning and their choices! Today, I'm blogging about the set-up, the six centers, and how I provided intervention for those struggling melodically. Keep reading until the end…

Ten Tricks and Treats for Halloween in the Music Room

Today, I'm blogging about ten tricks or treats for the music room...ten ways to integrate Halloween into your music lessons while engaging your students and improving their musicianship! #1: Skin and Bones This is truly one of my favorite folk songs for Halloween! Here is the notation: This is a call/response song, with the first part being the call, and the "ooo" part being the response. Here are the additional verses: She lived down by the old graveyard, ooo-ooo-ooo-ooo! One night she thought she'd take a walk, ooo-ooo-ooo-ooo! She walked down by the old graveyard, ooo-ooo-ooo-o…

Composing in the Music Room

So, you've taught students how to read music, using rhythm, solfa, and letter names, and now you want to have them compose. But where to begin? Just this year, I've really started delving into composition projects with my students, so I thought I'd share some ideas. Up until now, I think I've been so focused on teaching students how to read that I didn't feel like I had time to have them compose. However, after doing some reading on the subject and attending some great workshops, I realize that composition projects are doable in the general music classroom, even if you onl…
